Mexican Pottery--lead-free glazes?

Only two weeks till my first trip to Zihua. Here's a question that has come up on other trips to Mexico. I really like pottery I see there--especially the Talavera type, but my husband always says "How do you know it's safe? The glazes may contain lead." Since I really want things I can use, not just ornamental pieces, I end up passing the pottery by. Can anyone give me helpful advice?
